Labrador Retrievers are affectionate, energetic, food-loving dogs that adapt well to family life. In India, however, caring for a Labrador needs a little more attention to heat, humidity, shedding, diet, and exercise. Their short, dense double coat protects the skin and helps regulate body temperature, but it also produces plenty of loose hair.
At Pawparazzi, we see many Labradors, and one thing has become very clear from regular grooming sessions: most Labs do not need complicated maintenance. They need consistent maintenance.
A good brushing routine, sensible feeding, controlled exercise, ear care, dental hygiene, and protection from Indian heat can make a noticeable difference to their comfort and overall wellbeing.
Labrador Grooming: Focus on the Double Coat
A Labrador has a short, weather-resistant double coat consisting of a dense undercoat and protective outer coat. That structure makes the breed relatively easy to groom, but shedding can become heavy, particularly during seasonal coat changes.
For normal maintenance, brush your Labrador around once a week. During heavy shedding, increase brushing to several times a week or even daily when necessary. A rubber grooming brush, bristle brush, or suitable undercoat tool can help lift loose hair without aggressively stripping the coat.
Bathing and Skin Care
Do not bathe a Labrador simply because the weather is hot. Frequent bathing can remove natural oils and contribute to dry or irritated skin. Instead, bathe according to activity, coat condition, swimming, mud exposure, and skin needs. A properly formulated canine shampoo is preferable to human shampoo.
Indian humidity deserves extra attention. After bathing or swimming, dry the coat thoroughly, especially around the ears, paws, and areas where moisture can remain trapped. Persistent itching, redness, unusual odour, flakes, sores, or hair loss should be checked by a veterinarian rather than treated as a simple grooming issue.
Do not shave your Labrador for summer. The double coat provides insulation and protection from sunlight. Removing it does not provide the cooling benefit many owners expect and can interfere with normal coat regrowth. Regular brushing and proper bathing are better ways to manage heat and shedding.
Keep nails trimmed before they become long enough to click against the floor. Check paw pads for cracks, irritation, or injuries, particularly after walks on hot or rough surfaces. Labrador ears also deserve regular inspection because their floppy shape and frequent swimming can create conditions that encourage ear problems.

Labrador Diet: Control Portions, Not Just Ingredients
Labradors are notorious food enthusiasts. That affectionate face can make it difficult to refuse another treat, but weight management is one of the most important parts of Labrador care. The breed has a tendency toward obesity, and excess weight can place additional stress on joints and mobility.
Choose a complete and balanced dog food appropriate for your Labrador’s life stage, size, activity level, and individual needs. Puppies require different nutrition from adults, while senior dogs may need adjustments based on changing energy requirements and health.
Measure meals instead of free-feeding. Treats should form only a modest part of the daily calorie intake. If you use biscuits during training, account for those calories when planning the day’s food.
Fresh drinking water should always be available. This becomes particularly important in India’s warmer months, when outdoor activity and panting increase fluid requirements.
For puppies, avoid trying to accelerate growth with excessive food or supplements. Large-breed puppies need controlled nutrition to support healthy skeletal development. Your veterinarian can recommend an appropriate puppy diet and feeding quantity.
Exercise for Labradors in Indian Weather
A Labrador needs more than a short toilet walk. This is an active sporting breed that benefits from daily physical activity combined with mental stimulation. Walking, retrieving, swimming, scent games, obedience training, and interactive play can all provide useful outlets.
The biggest adjustment in India is when you exercise your dog.
During hot weather, schedule outdoor walks during cooler morning or evening hours. Avoid intense running or prolonged play during peak afternoon heat. Asphalt and concrete can also become dangerously hot for paw pads, so check the walking surface before heading outside.
Watch for excessive panting, weakness, drooling, vomiting, confusion, or unusual lethargy. These can indicate heat-related distress and require prompt veterinary attention.
Puppies need age-appropriate activity rather than intense workouts. Avoid repeated high-impact jumping, sudden stops, and rapid direction changes while their bones and joints are developing.
Mental exercise is equally valuable. A Labrador that spends the entire day indoors can become bored even after a physical walk. Short training sessions, food puzzles, scent-based games, and supervised retrieving can challenge the brain without exposing your dog to excessive heat.
A Simple Labrador Care Routine
From our grooming experience at Pawparazzi, the easiest approach is to make care part of your Labrador’s normal routine rather than waiting for problems to appear.
Weekly: brush the coat, inspect the skin, check ears and paws, and look for ticks, fleas, irritation, or unusual lumps.
Every few weeks: assess nail length and clean the ears only when needed using a dog-safe ear-cleaning product recommended by your veterinarian.
Regularly: brush the teeth with canine toothpaste and a suitable toothbrush. Daily brushing provides the best routine for maintaining oral hygiene. (American Kennel Club)
As needed: schedule a bath after heavy dirt, mud, swimming, or when the coat needs cleaning. Professional grooming can also help during heavy shedding and allows trained groomers to notice coat or skin changes.
Most importantly, do not judge your Labrador’s health by appearance alone. A shiny coat is useful, but healthy body condition, comfortable movement, clean ears, healthy paws, fresh breath, normal energy, and stable weight tell you much more.
For Indian Labrador owners, the goal is not elaborate grooming. It is consistent care adapted to heat, humidity, activity, and your dog’s individual needs. When grooming, nutrition, exercise, hygiene, and veterinary care work together, your Lab can stay comfortable, active, and happy throughout the year.
This guide provides general pet-care information. Individual dietary, exercise, skin, and grooming needs can vary, so consult your veterinarian for concerns or changes in your Labrador’s health.
